Do you know about the boy who gets into gang fights, was involved in a murder and smokes cigarettes, all at the young age of 14. Due to some events in the novel The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, Ponyboy Curtis would be better off in the system than with his guardian and older brother Darry. While the others who side with Darry have good defensed about why Ponyboy is better off with him, there are far more reasons about why Ponyboy would be better off in a foster home, or the “system”. One of his friends shoplift so much that is what he is known for. “Two-Bit was famous for shoplifting and his black handled switchblade.” Ponyboy also began carrying a switchblade to places he went, one of those places includes his schoo. If someone were to catch him with his switchblade he could have gotten expelled which means he probably wouldn't have gone to school again as a result. In the system Ponyboy would be around much better influences than those he calls his friends. Another instance where Ponyboy is dragged into something one of his friends did is when his friend killed someone in self defence and insisted that he and Ponyboy ran away. “We were really running away, with the police after us for murder and a loaded gun by our side.” Ponyboy in this situation should have gone to Darry or his guardian for help with what to do next, but instead goes to another gang member. Perhaps Ponyboy didn’t trust Darry with this information or maybe he just didn’t think Darry would know what to do.
