Pop Art (Doyle)

1] Can you find anything special about the way Doyle uses language? Do you notice any repeated sounds/consonants or other devices that make the essay read more like a poem? Share anything you notice.

Reading this essay by Doyle was a little more difficult than I thought it would be. I guess because English is my second language I had to read it more than once. What makes this essay read more like a poem is rhythm and meter. There is a lot of repeating words she, he, they, for, the verbs are usually used as infinitives. Although it’s not very obvious there are rhymes. Also the mood of the essay is kind of dramatic.

Was it too much like a National Geographic article, or did you like the structure (moving from the smallest animal to the largest - to us?) Pick out a key passage and copy it here. Why did you think this passage was significant? Explain all parts of your answer fully.

I did enjoy learning about the hummingbird’s heart as well as about the whale’s heart. I think that was interesting to read about. But I was a little confused as the essay changed at the end. At the beginning it was more like National Geographic article, and towards the end it changed. The passage I would pick would be this one, “So much held in a heart in a lifetime. So much held in a heart in a day, an hour, a moment. We are utterly open with no one in the end—not mother and father, not wife or husband, not lover, not child, not friend. We open windows to each but we live alone in the house of the heart. Perhaps we must. Perhaps we could not bear to be so naked, for fear of a constantly harrowed heart”. The reason why I chose this part is because this essay was not as much about the actually size of the heart as it was about how we as humans are worried about fully opening our hearts and let people get in. Small heart can have as much joy as big heart, it’s not about the actual size, but it’s about us how much we are willing to open up and let people in. People are scared, they are not free as animals, we overthink everything and than miss on
