While corsets originated in Italy their rise in popularity in the 16th century has been attributed to Catherine de' Medici, King Henry II of France’ wife who introduced them to the women of the French court believing they were an essential part of ladies fashion. By the middle of the 16th century corsets were a staple garment in British and European fashion, since then they have continued to evolve and repeatedly swayed in and out of style however they have been ever present in fashion.
