In this paper I will discuss the effects of 911 on American culture and society and how it changed the way United States citizens navigate their lives today. On September 11, 2001 a catastrophic event happened that would change America forever. That event was 911 the event occurred in New York City when two fighter planes crashed into the World Trade Center twin towers. This event would live on in our hearts forever. The Atlantic published a story written by Dominic Tierney on August 23, 2016 titled “The Twenty Years War. In this article he described five phases of a war between the United States and ql-Qaeda in which he says neither side has won (Tierney 1). The first phase occurred between 1996-2001 was highlighted by the bombing of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania which killed 224 people, 12 of them were Americans (Tierney 2).

Much has changed in the world since 9/11. Based on the information gathered for this paper and policies and procedures passed I can conclude that it is harder for terrorist to enter the country, we now have stricter and more rigorous safety controls implemented in commercial airports and federal agencies have broken down barriers to communication. These procedures have made us safer but I don’t think we are safe. The increase in the number of hate crimes against Muslims or people like them in America is of concern here and the SPLC indicates that there is an increase in home grown domestic terrorist but the current Trump administration will not identify or acknowledge the perpetrators of these acts as terrorist or the acts as terrorism (SPLC). Most of the terrorists’ attacks in the United States since 9/11 have been committed by American citizens or legal residents
