The purpose of this study was to examine symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in college students who have been diagnosed with a chronic illness. There was a total of 195 College students at a private university on the east coast volunteered for this study. They had to be 18 years of age and have experienced a major life event or chronic illness. The students completed five surveys: the Life Experiences Survey, the Chronic Illness Appraisals Scale, the Life Orientation Test, the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and the Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale. Results found that more than half of the students scored low on the criteria for PTSD, meaning that they re-experienced symptoms that had a negative impact on their functioning. It was found that students with chronic illness may develop PTSD due to managing multiple demands on top of a serious illness. Participants included six administrators and seven faculty members. The study used semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and reviewed document to obtain their information. The documents for this study were governmental documents on disability law. Four themes emerged from this: lack of funding and knowledge around specific disabilities, students themselves having many issues in the classrooms, and faculty with inadequate skills addressing students with disabilities.
