Acute stress disorder consists of fear and similar symptoms after a traumatic event that last less than a month. Posttraumatic stress disorder consists of the same symptoms as acute stress disorder but last for a longer period of time (months or years). Traumatic events include those where is threatened by death, injury, sexual violation, or abuse. Events that trigger acute and post-traumatic stress disorders include acts of terrorism, combat, child abuse, sexual abuse, rape, accidents, and natural disasters. Symptoms that follow these incidents that may indicate the possibility of an acute stress disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder include re-experiences of the event through the means of memories or dreams, avoidance of activities that remind of the traumatic event, dissociation, and anxiety, depression or anger.
There are a large variety of means to reduce stress. Some typical stress relievers are exercise, meditation or yoga, coloring, disconnecting from social media/technology, soothing music, hanging out with friends, or taking a day off to enjoy the things you like to do. I had a foreign exchange student stay with me for a year who was from Norway. She couldn’t believe the amount of time my parents spent at work, the few days they got off from work, and even the amount of homework assigned in school. I think many new parents struggle with deciding between staying at home with the child and sending the child to daycare. The way society views success makes it difficult to balance a family and career, which results in high levels of stress. It will be interesting to see if there come any shifts with the workforce. Also I wonder with the continued stress the workforce adds if it is having any effects on life
