A poet, Eric Hoffer, wrote “It is doubtful if the oppressed ever fight for freedom. They fight for pride and power -- power to oppress others. The oppressed want above all to imitate their oppressors; they want to retaliate.” People who were being persecuted wanted to gain back their power that the persecutors have taken. The Declaration of Independence and A Brief history of the Salem Witch Trials both present power and persecution.
In the Declaration of Independence, power has come to the United States after persecution and unfair treatment from Great Britain. “That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, […]”(US, 1776) The people of the United States are the people who have the power, and then United States used that power to break free from Great Britain’s rule. The United States took action after not having rights unprotected for so long, and decided that they would use this Declaration of Independence to show Great Britain that they are independent, and did not need Great Britain. The Declaration of Independence notes, “We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to
