On pages 58 and 59, Larson introduces Patrick Eugene Joseph Prendergast. My first impression of Prendergast is that is he a loner, and that he is a laughingstock. He is described by his newsboys as being hapless and sorry. He does not seem to have respect from them, nor does he seem very important. The line, “That Prendergast might one day shape the destiny of the World’s Columbian Exposition…” shows that he will be significant in the future, and it leaves a sense of suspense hanging for the next chapters. Towards the end of page 59, Prendergast gives me a sense that he seems somewhat obsessive. He continuously writes postcards to people he does not know, and the way it is worded it makes me feel like he randomly decided to become a part of
