Shortly after Nixon took office, he managed to improve relations with the Soviet Union-which is called Detente. Also, he put Vietnamization into effect. This withdrew U.S. troops from Vietnam and handed control of the war back to South Vietnam. With Nixon in office, inflation went up. In 1972, Nixon visited China in-order-to improve relations with them. He put the SALT 1 into effect which was meant to restrain the arms race in strategic ballistic missiles. It was only four months after this when the Watergate Scandal took place. This was a major political scandal that involved a break-in by five men at the DMC and Nixon’s attempt to cover it up. When Reagan took office, he came up with the phrase “Peace Through Strength” which suggests that military power can help preserve peace. Reaganomics were economic policies that Reagan associated especially with the reduction of taxes and the promotion of unrestricted free-market activity. Stagflation was also occurring during Reagan’s time in office. This was persistent high inflation combined with high unemployment and stagnant demand in the country’s economy. Not long after this, an assassination attempt was made on President Reagan. He was shot, and injured, but, fortunately, he survived. Reagan came up the Star Wars(SDI) idea. This was a vision he had of creating a weapon that would float in outer space and shoot threatening missiles out of space in-order-to prevent them from ever reaching Earth. Reagan also got to experience being the president when the first GPS(global positioning system) was launched. This allowed the location of an object in space. Despite these good things, a political crisis which was brought about by political and religious unrest in the country leading to a US military intervention-Marines in Lebanon.
