There are several ideas as to what this specifically means. The first suggestion is authority. Humans are God’s representatives on the earth, with authority over creation. As humans, we have a spiritual dimension to us that animals do not have, for animals were not created in the image of God. Secondly, perhaps the idea that humans were created in the image of God means that we have a moral capacity, signifying we have a conscience with the ability to make moral choices and decisions. The last suggestion is relationship. We are the only beings that are capable of having a relationship with God. The Primeval History gives an outline of what the rest of eternity will look like when it comes to humans and our sinful nature. It shows that we are prideful and do not listen and obey God that we need saving from this sinful world. It is very common for history to repeat itself and we see this quite a lot in the Pentateuch. Time after time, we are shown the need for God’s salvation. From Cain and Abel to the tower of Babel, the Primeval History is constantly demonstrating how messed up humans are and how great the demand is for God to come save us. God begins his plan of redemption by sending Abraham in Genesis chapter twelve. Abraham did not put an end to sin nor did he save humanity, but he was an important part of initiating God’s plan to save his people from sin and death.
