In November 1989, Princess Di visited Sitanala Leprosy Hospital in Indonesia, against the advice of the press, she was filmed sitting on the beds of patients with leprosy, shaking their hands and touching their bandages. The Leprosy Mission wrote a thank you message to Princess Diana for highlighting the problems of leprosy and asked her to become its Patron, which she accepted. A patron is a person who gives financial or other support to a person, organization, cause, or activity.
