The main stream media has put a severe damper on the correctional officer’s image. In the movies they always display the correctional staff as hardened with no care for the individuals incarcerated and ethically corrupted. There are officers in the system that are correctly displayed within the movie, however there are other types of officers. I have worked over five years within correctional facilities; over the years I have had the opportunity to observe these three main types of officers: dedicated officers, paycheck officers and dirty officers.
Dedicate Officer
A dedicated officer is the type of individual that every correctional institution desires and are always looking to hire. They come to work to impartially to enforce all the rules that the offenders have to follow. These officers will adhere to all the rules and regulations within the agency to be able to show that they are committed. They do care for the individuals incarcerated and want all of them to be able to be reintroduced into society without reentry into the system. That is why the insist on the rules being followed. They believe in the correctional system but seem to be viewed as overbearing by the inmates. Inmates believe they go too “hard” and do not want them around their housing area. It is the most basic type of officer that you have. The officers in this category just complete the very basics of their jobs, there are no extra efforts to be able to help the offender’s rehabilitation into society-they just don’t care. The inmates want this type of officers so they will be able to do anything they want in the housing area because of lack of dedication to enforce the rules. Agency don’t mind to have these officer but do wish that the officers would extend their efforts towards the main goals of the correctional
