The Premier League
The Premier League is an association of men’s football clubs. It operates on a unique system of relegation and promotion. It is an English league which also accommodates Scottish, Irish and Welsh clubs. It is comprised of 20 teams which play with the aim of winning the title. The 20 teams act as shareholders in the league. The League is currently ongoing with seasons beginning on August and ending in the month of May the next year. The League is sponsored by Barclays bank. It is also referred to as the Barclays Premier League. Each team is entitled to 38 games each season totaling the number of games played to 380 matches. The games are played on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. However, some are also played on weekday evenings (Wilson 26). The English premier league is a source of joy and competition to the players and fans worldwide.
The competition began as FA Premier League in 1992 (Wilson 26). This was following the decision of clubs which were held in the First Division of the First League to leave The Football League. The Football League was founded 1888. The teams left with the motive of taking advantage of the newly passed television rights deal. The deal is currently worth 1 billion Pounds as of the year 2013-14. BskyB and BT Group are the current groups securing the rights which allow them to broadcast 116 games and 38 games respectively.
The Premier League is said to be the most watched football league in the world with its fans originating from all continents (Wilson 26). It is broadcast in 212 territories then to 643 million homes and has a potential audience of up to 4.7 billion people world wide. The average match attendance as of 2010-11 season was 35, 363. This was rated the second highest rank in all leagues worldwide. The stadiums were also averaged to have been 92.2% full (Wilson 26).
The 20 clubs currently participating in the league are expected to play each club twice. These matches are played once at their home stadium and the other match at their opponent’s stadium. This happens until all the 38 games are completed (Wilson 26). Every win is awarded 3 points and one point is awarded for a draw. There are no points awarded for a loss.
