For this investigation I decided to watch the movie, Ted. While watching the movie I made this list of all the times I saw product placement:
Snacks on living room table at John’s apartment shown throughout the movie: Pops Cereal, Ritz Crackers, Rold Gold’s Pretzels, and Pop Ems (Peripheral product placement)
Top Gun References: When talking to his boss in the beginning of the movie, John says, “I’m not going to let you down goose”. Also Tom Skerritt from Top Gun was mentioned twice during the movie
A Pepsi bottle is shown on John’s desk at work (Peripheral product placement)
The Red Sox team was promoted throughout the movie with shirts, a baseball that has “Red Sox” written on it, and the stadium itself at the end of the movie.
An iPad is used by Lori, John’s girlfriend, when they are in bed. (Peripheral product placement)
Budweiser is definitely the main sponsor for this movie. Bottles, cans and logos are shown constantly throughout the entire movie. Some examples include: bottles, and cans on the living room table in John’s apartment, a bottle when John first meets Lori in a club, a Budweiser box is used for moving Ted into his new apartment, cans and bottles thrown at John when him and Ted are fighting, bottles all over Ted’s party at his new apartment, and Budweiser was shown with a huge banner as the official sponsor for the Nora Jones concert that Lori and Rex go to. All of this was peripheral product placement.
John talks about how fancy Cristal Champagne is as they are drinking it at his anniversary dinner. (Infomercial product placement)
Lays is the only brand that is recognizable in the grocery store that Ted gets a job at. (Peripheral product placement)
Axe body wash shown when Ted is in the bath. (Peripheral product placement) iPhones are used by multiple characters throughout the movie. (Peripheral product placement)
Ikea is mentioned when Ted moves into his new apartment. John says, “Wow this place looks great.” And Ted replies with, “Thanks, it’s all Ikea. I did the whole place for $47.” (Infomercial product placement)
Don Q rum is shown and shots of it is poured by Flash Gordan at Ted’s party. (Peripheral product placement)
Stella beer is also shown at Ted’s party. (Peripheral product placement) Nora Jones is playing a Fender Guitar at her concert. (Peripheral product placement)
Jameson Wiskey is poured backstage at the Nora Jones concert (Peripheral product placement)
Axe, Subway, Pepsi, and Budweiser are shown as sponsors on signs at the Nora Jones concert. (Peripheral product placement)
Ted appears on the front cover of a Rolling Stones Magazine at the house of the kidnappers. (Peripheral product placement)
Volkswagen cars are used multiple times throughout the movie. The red Volkswagen stands out when Lori uses it to chase after the people who kidnapped Ted. (Peripheral product placement)
Names and logos are shown all over the Red Sox stadium. The ones that I saw were Coca Cola, Ford, Duncan Donuts, New Balance, AAA, and Sports Authority. (Peripheral product placement)

Personally I find product placement in television and movies to be pretty interesting. I enjoy taking what we learn in class and being able to use it to analyze companies, commercials, TV, shows, etc. On the other hand, if product placement is not executed right or is used too much, it can sometimes distracting, and can take away from the overall storyline.
As you can see from the list I made, there was an insane amount of product placement put into, Ted. After finishing the movie I decided to do some more research and I came to find that Ted, won the 2012 brandchannel.com award of achievement for product placement in a single film. There were a grand total of 38 identifiable brands shown throughout the movie. Even though there was in insane amount of product placement, it really didn’t bother me. Almost all of the
