Equality:
To be Equal is to have the same value. Equality is essential and should majorly be promoted in an early years setting. It is important for pupils to learn about equality so that they will treat one another as they would like to be treated. At any early years care setting, it is very likely that there will be children from different cultural, religious backgrounds and different genders. Equality does not only mean including people from different ethnic & religious backgrounds, but it also means including the disabled or the ill. It means not stereotyping or labelling someone because of their background and ethnicity etc.
Equality generally covers the following in terms of discrimination:
• gender
• ethnicity
• disability
• age

This will make other pupils more interested in different cultures, and they will be able to understand that people of all different cultures are equal and should be treated with respect in and out of school. Teaching different languages will also encourage children to have a variety of friends from different cultures and make them have an interest. The school could also serve cultural foods for lunch for pupils so that they are able to taste foods that are not usual to what they have, and that children who normally eat cultural foods are not left out as well. Another way to promote diversity and equality is to have books and textbooks available in different languages for children who don’t as easily understand English and children who want to learn other languages. This means that children with a language barrier will be able to learn and read books at the same rate as other children. To show that the school is culturally diverse and supports equality they could put up posters promoting equality and discouraging discrimination so that when pupils see these posters, they will be reminded that discrimination and prejudice is not okay, and that they should treat one another how they
