Prior to the arrival of the Europeans, the Mayans had already begin to anticipate the beginning of a new era. This was through prophecies such as Napuc Tun, Ahau Pech, and Chilam Balam which foretold that a new world would begin. (Richard Luxton & Pablo Balam ‘The Mystery of the Mayan Hieroglyphs: the Vision of an Ancient Tradition. 29). When the European invaders came, the Mayans immediately thought of the prophecy of Chilam Balam foretold by the great Jaguar prophet. Chilam Balam prophetised that white, bearded foreigners bearing a world tree symbol would come and force the natives to follow their new gods. It was foretold that those who yielded would be shown mercy and be spared, but those who resisted would be killed. (Luxtom & Balam p29).
