“Crystal Village” is a village that I want to build in Africa in the future. I always dreamed my own little country and kept thinking how I could make my future citizens happy. The second question of the exam gave me a chance to specify and document my thoughts. First, I had to choose if I will allow referenda or initiatives. My home country, Korea holds a referendum so I already knew about it, but I never heard about initiatives before. Initiatives prefer a bill originated by people rather than lawmakers and some people argues that it is an ancient idea. There are two types: Direct and Indirect initiatives. In direct initiatives, the legislation marked up by petition is put on the ballot and if it gets approved by voters, it automatically becomes a law and it does not need legislative oversight (O’Neil …show more content…
On the contrary, indirect usually takes slower process. When the petition meets the standard, the proposals go on the ballot (O’Neil 2015). Both types seem very new and effective for me, but always there are pros and cons. If politicians are ignoring the concerns of their citizen, the initiative can be a good tool that people can pass the law by themselves and it is a more direct democracy. However, the law made by normal people cannot be always constitutional.There might be some special interest groups and they could control people and make a law that could benefit themselves. The examples of initiatives are some states such as Maryland and Maine allows same-sex marriage and legalizing medical marijuana in Massachusetts and Colorado (O’Neil 2015).
