The possible future of an independent Scotland is the reason for several ongoing debates in terms of defence, most of which put their focus on the future of Trident nuclear submarines. The UK's nuclear deterrent is currently stationed at Her Majesty's Naval Base ( HMNB ) Clyde on Scotland's west coast, meaning that British defence chiefs would have to move their Trident programme elsewhere should Scotland vote for independence. A study published by John Ainslie of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in January 2012 reveals that there are no viable alternatives to the existing sites. "Possible sites including Devonport, Barrow (where the submarines are built), Portland, Falmouth and Milford Haven were all discounted in a secret
