Have you ever used an indoor tanning booth? Brezina says, people all around the United States are “flocking to tanning salons” where they can get a tan year round from machines that expose their skin to harmful UV light (4). The people who visit these indoor tanning salons are putting themselves in great harm, just for cosmetic purposes. The doses of UV emitted by these powerful tanning booth are ten to fifteen times higher than that of the sun (Geller 1). No good ever comes from using theses tanning booths. Consumers Union says, these facilities are putting indoor tanners at risk for “cataracts, cancer, suppression of the immune system, and premature aging” (1). All of those risks are not worth the harmful damage these machines cause your body. UV light causes damage to the corneas and retinas of tanner's eyes, eventually causing cataracts (Consumers Union 2). Closing your eyes or wearing ordinary sunglasses is not sufficient (Consumers Union 2). Even when wearing protective eye wear in the tanning booths you are still damaging your eyes greatly. No one knows how many times you can tan before the damage becomes visible, but it is cumulative and irreversible (“Indoor Tanning” 3). In 2009, the World Health Organization classified indoor tanning as a “classone carcinogen” based on the strong link between indoor tanning and skin cancer (PR 1). Indoor tanning is now found to be addictive. Brezina says, “studies have shown that tanning may be addictive in the same sense that drugs and alcohol
