In the story “Through the Tunnel” by Doris Lessing the protagonist, Jerry is initiated into a group. Jerry wants to be like the older kids that were diving into the bay and swimming through the hole at the bottom of the water. At first he begins diving into the water and tried to get the boys attention. He got their attention but they frowned. So Jerry noticed the boys were swimming through a gap, or hole. Jerry tried to do the same to get their attention again but he failed. He couldn’t see underwater because the salt water stung his eyes. He couldn’t breathe very long underwater also.
