Providing a diagnosis can be a relief for some and burden for others. Finally having a reason for something is beneficial because it typically will explain many why’s in that person’s life. Since most people do not or will not ever exhibit every symptom associated with the given disorder harm can present itself by way of the client “developing” every symptom.

Being knowledgeable about how to properly diagnosis people as well as understand other clinicians diagnoses are partly tied to the above question. Administering the wrong diagnosis could have detrimental effects on clients emotionally and psychologically. If it is found that a client has PTSD then the counselor would be aware of possible triggers and can also inform friends and family members about them; with the client’s consent of course. If the client has some type of phobia disorder then the counselor would have to decide on how best to treat it.
