There is not much different approaches that I can think of. Phone calls, emails, flyers, open communication, notes, meetings, assessments, letters to the parents. Lastly, teachers need to keep insisting, in a good way at the times, to parents to get involved in their children's education.
What information would you want to know about your students' home literacy practices and routines?
The culture of the parents. The language of the parents. For how long parents and children interact with the book. For how long parents talk about school and the teacher.

An open relationship between parents and teachers is a key relation to develop to create a comfortable environment for each child. I just imagine re-create an activity that a child enjoys at home in the school. Any activity to learn what they love and explore it in the class as a lesson. It may create a sense of an extension that school is like home.
