Word analysis includes phonics and decoding. Through word analysis, students figure out unfamiliar words via recognition of the interrelationship between that exists between the spelling and pronunciation of letters, syllables, morphemes, and words.
Domain 2 of the RICA consists of Competencies 3-7. Collectively, these competencies will investigate the instruction, assessment, and differentiation of the following skills in terms of spelling and reading development: phonological and phonemic awareness and development, print awareness, letter recognition, the alphabetic principle, syllabic and structural analysis, sight word recognition and automaticity.

Phonological awareness and phonemic awareness are different yet related.
Phonological awareness is the recognition that oral language is made of smaller units, such as syllables and words. Phonemic awareness is a type of phonological awareness. Phonemic awareness includes the ability to recognize specific units of spoken language called phonemes. Phonemes are unique and easily identifiable units of sound. Examples of phonemes include /t/, /b/, /c/, etc. It is through phonemes that words are distinguished from one another.
Phonological and phonemic awareness play a role in reading development.
Phonological and phonemic awareness do not require written language because phonemic awareness is based entirely upon speech. However, phonological and phonemic awareness are the prerequisites for literacy. Thus, experts recommend that all kindergarteners develop phonemic awareness as part of their reading
