Although the Puritans’ main goal of settlement was to maintain a united community solely based on religion , social order strives to overcome and corrupt the government of Salem, Massachusetts. Many basic civil rights are denied in the community. Rights such as having the choice of not attending church, voicing one’s opinions, cruel and unusual punishment, and just simply telling the truth. Most would think that this kind of government would be uncivil, but it was believed to have worked in the past. Due to the events of the Salem Witch Trials, civilians began to realize the insufficiency of the government.

When it came time for Christmas, they were not allowed to celebrate. If they took a holiday off from work, free time had to be spent praying. Puritans did not have novelist nor did they want anyone reading books. Anything close to enjoyment was strongly prohibited. They believed that their purpose in life was to live for religion, so prayer should be everyone’s main focus.Also from Miller’s essay, Puritans discriminated against every other religion. This had mostly to do with the events taking place in England. Many were persecuted for not agreeing with the Anglican church, some being family members of those now apart of the Puritan community.

Though the Puritan society may have been a success when they first settled in Massachusetts, the system was bound to fail. Basic human rights are needed to keep civilians satisfied and comfortable in their own home. Having the right to be honest was revoked. Making a mistake and being whipped for it was almost a tradition of theirs. Not having the right to celebrate a holiday or take enjoyment in anything would drive anyone insane. That is why it can be concluded from the acts of social order that the system would have never lasted in a normal problematic
