1. I would put aside my own beliefs, and be culturally sensitive to this stressed overwhelmed mother. “Parents are not the only ones whose belief systems affect communication. Professionals, too have attitudes about ASD and general attitudes about the world and the people in it that come thorough in their interaction with parents.” (O’Brien & Daggett, 2013, p. 45)

I would objectively, actively listen to what the mother is trying to tell me. “By listening carefully to parents talk about their children, professional can create a positive framework for a productive working relationship that will ultimately benefit everyone-especially the children.” (O’Brien & Daggett, 2013, p. 26)

3. I would reiterate back to the mother what I understood her to be saying. “You have three small children at home besides this child and you feel very overwhelmed. You haven’t done the intervention or collected the data in the past couple of weeks as it was easier to use “pull-ups”, since you lacked time.” Clarifying what is being said is not just about getting the facts straight but allows us to gain insight into the emotions behind the words. It makes the mother feel listened to and reassures her that what she is saying is valid.
