And in 1877, her second brother, W.P. Leleiohoku, who was heir, died, naming her heir presumptive (Tikkanen 2). After she became heir, she worked hard to show she was worthy. She worked as King Kalakaua’s regent during his world tour in 1881 and worked to organize schools for Hawaiians (Tikkanen 3). She even wrote a song called “Aloha Oe”, which contributed greatly to Hawaiian culture (Liliuokalani 1). Doing these things helped prove to her people that she was worthy of her role in the monarchy. Queen Liliuokalani began to work hard for her people as soon as she became queen on January 29, 1891, after King Kalakaua died (Tikkanen 3).
