He was born into a wealthy slave family, and he was denied of an education, but he was a very good poet.“For three days I am nowhere I do not exist. For three more days I am somewhere in pain”(Engle and Qualls). This quote shows the harsh life of Manzano as a unfairly treated slave of Cuba. I feel Engle wrote this because she wanted to show the history of Cuba. And to show the history she showed the life of a slave from Cuba. Manzano eventually escaped because his mistress was very irrational. He learned how to write, and he wrote about his experiences. Engle's text The Surrender Tree impacted the hearts of many.
