She suffered from an ulcer, arthritis, and heart disease. She died on April 14, 1964 in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Rachel Carson graduated from Pennsylvania College for Women in 1929. She won a scholarship to study zoology at Johns Hopkins University. So she decided to move to Baltimore, Maryland to further study at Johns Hopkins University. Carson taught at the University of Maryland for five years, then later joined the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1936. Rachel Carson was inspired to write her first book by her knowledge of the natural history of the sea and wanting to help make the world a better place. She published her first book in 1941 called Under the Sea-Wind, which helped describe marine life. She published her second book by the name of The Sea Around Us in 1951. During the 1950’s, she started to conduct research on the effects of pesticides on the food chain. This research lead to her most influential work called Silent Spring, which was published in 1962.
