A few months later, Rachel graduated from high school and continued working as a supply person at Saint Joseph’s Hospital. At the hospital, Rachel worked her way up to taking patients’ blood pressures and temperatures. Additionally, she worked as a part-time waitress and at Hue’s Aircraft. In the fall of 1959, she attended Oceanside Carlsbad College where she completed general education courses. Rachel remained at this college for two years before having her first child.

When becoming a parent, she enjoyed watching her children develop as they grew up. Some challenges she faced were concerning medical visits and complications. The first medical complication her young family faced was surrounding Rebecca birth. Having been born with hyaline membrane disease, Rachel knew that her baby would not survive. When her passing finally came, the nurse did not tell Rachel anything yet; however, she already knew that Rebecca had passed. The second medical visit and complication was with an eye specialist for her son Randy who was born with his eyes crossed. Randy had surgery on both eyes at a very young age in December of 1964. The last medical visit was with Rachel’s second child, Renee, who broke her collar bone while playing in the family’s garage. All of this was a lot to deal with during the first years of becoming a
