Racism In ZZ Packer's Brownies

In ZZ Packer’s “Brownies” the theme is still relevant even today as it touches on how racism is still a force present in society even though most think we are past that point in history. Packer uses flashbacks to help with this message as when Laurel remembered how they had all been taught to dread growing up as it meant working with “whites”: “We had all been taught that adulthood was full of sorrow and pain, taxes, and bills, dreaded work and dealings with whites, sickness and death.” (17) Since they had been taught specifically to dread working with whites it shows to the broader picture of the world as they feel and are treated as inferior to them. This is also raised in significance as almost everybody has to deal with death and taxes
