Americans have always been fascinated with the roaring 1920’s. People love the idea of being free and rebellious, and not having the worries we have in today’s life. The 20’s were a time of change and happiness for the most part. So many advancements took place during this time that helped shape America. Everyone took advantage of these advancements and had the time of their lives dancing and having fun at night and enjoying their lives. It was not all fun and games though. Personal and political liberties became a big discussion during this time; André Siegfried explains details of that in a magazine article I will reveal later on. Within a magazine article, ““The Gulf Between” Monthly, Vol. 141, March 1928” André Siegfried explains how over a period of observation, he has noticed that although change was not clearly noticeable in the beginning, it had become “patent in 1919 and 1925”. Siegfried was a Frenchman who had visited and examined changes in America several times at the beginning of the century. His first visit being in 1898, he decided to continue to come and study the changes America went through. About every five years he would come and write down his findings. In 1925 he disclosed his observations, claiming that there were immense changes that occurred throughout different areas of the American life; economic point of view, civilization point of view, political, and moral point of view. He comes to a final summarization that, “Mass production and mass civilization, its natural consequences, are the true characteristics of the new American society.” These changes have truly reshaped America but not all was a good outcome, they contributed to a lot of conflicts including our civil liberties.
