Mary Whiton Calkins was born on the 30th of March, in 1863 in Hartford, Connecticut. Calkins was raised until the age of 17 in Buffalo, New York. She attended Smith College in 1882, then graduate in 1885 with her bachelor's degree in philosophy. Calkins was tutoring Greek for the student at Wellesley when she was offered a new teaching position in psychology. At that time Harvard would not allow women to study there, however, she still went to the graduate seminar at the school. After completing her Ph.D., Harvard denied her the degree that she rightfully deserved because she was a woman.
