In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Rainsford uses three tricks to elude Zaroff. For the first trick Rainsford had set up a Malay man-catcher, using a huge dead tree and a smaller living one. As Zaroff arrived after navigating Rainsford’s arduous paths he had walked right into his trap. Zaroff had walked onto the trigger and immediately sensed his danger and lept back in an attempt to escape jeopardy, although Zaroff was very quick and alert in his actions he was unable to walk away untouched and he took a blow to his shoulder.
