There are many brave people who gave their lives for others during World War Two. Some were soldiers and others were normal citizens who hid jews and other “illigals”. Another group of brave people are priests, sisters, and brothers. One priest in particular is one of the bravest people I’ve ever heard of. His name is Fr. Maximilian Kolbe. In Poland on January 8, 1894, Rajmund Kolbe was born. His parents were relatively poor. Rajmund had a strong faith from a young age. When he was just a child, Mary visited him in a dream. She was holding two crowns: one red and one white. She asked if he would receive either of them. The white meant he would stay pure and the red meant he would become a martyr. The seminary was in Austria, so they had to cross the border illegally. In 1910, he became Maximilian Kolbe. Four years later, he took his vows to become a monk. Then, five more years after that, he was ordained a priest. Fr. Kolbe focused on the conversion of sinners and enemies of the Church during the time he spent in Rome. Because of this, he experienced angry protests. Even though people probably threatened to hurt him, he still carried out his mission. In 1930, Kolbe journeyed to Japan. During his six years there, he was successful in more than one way. He created a Japanese version of a magazine he wrote, even though he didn’t speak or know Japanese. But his biggest success lies in the side of a mountain. Fr. Kolbe decided to build a monastery on a locally unfavorable side of a mountain in Nagasaki. When the atomic bomb was dropped on the city, the monastery was protected by the other side of the mountain. I believe God told him where to
