Although no one was speaking, I could barely hear a thing between the deafening crashing of the waves and the heavy breathing escaping the men surrounding me.
As the beach came into sight, the platoon leaders on each boat shouted the same instructions I’d heard a million a million times; “clear the beach, make your way to the cliffs and try not to get killed while you’re at it.” Soldiers around me were vomiting, shaking and kissing the crosses that hung around their necks, desperately seeking to improve their chances of survival. The boys cries could no longer be heard between the gunfire and explosions. The sand proved difficult to run through and my helmet fell into the sand. BOOM! It was even closer to me than before. I was thrown sideways and a stabbing pain shot through my head. Suddenly all the noise stopped. I looked around still seeing more shells exploding and the machine guns piercing bodies everywhere.
