This meme focuses on the societal rule that forms the main obstacle for our Main protagonist Montag to overcome. What Montag aims to do once he has realized what is going on in his society is to use books in order to restore the three things, as Faber says, are missing from society. “Number one, as I said, quality of information. Number two: leisure to digest it. And number three: the right to carry out actions based on what we learn from interaction with the first two” (Bradbury 81). However, this turns out to be harder than Montag expected, because as Beatty told him, “There you have it, Montag. It didn’t come from the Government down. There was no dictum, no declaration, no censorship, to start with, no! Technology, mass exploitation, and minority pressure carried the trick, thank God” (Bradbury 55). These people didn’t want the fear that knowing the world was not perfect brought them, and books caused this. As Faber fabulously puts it, “So now do you see why books are hated and feared? They show the pores in the face of life. The comfortable people want only wax moon faces, poreless, hairless, expressionless” (Bradbury 79). The people in this society only want what they can perceive as perfect.
