I have been on probation for the last month due to a major blunder. The team I had been working with had spent months secretly investigating and infiltrating a drug cartel. But I had totally blown our cover. I didn’t have any pathetic excuse for not being able to shoot a human being at all. Sure he was a dangerous criminal, but he was still a child, and only thirteen years of age. I couldn’t point a dangerous weapon at a thirteen-year-old, criminal or not. But I had let him get away and there goes our whole operation. My fellow agents had poured countless hours and amount of work and it ended with horrific results. He was said to have the intelligence equivalent to five ordinary investigative bureaus and seven intelligence agencies. He never revealed himself in public, or in private. Nobody knew his real name or his identity. But I wouldn’t blame him because doing so was dangerous, because L was able to solve any crime. Say if you were somebody planning to commit a murder. Your chances of getting away will greatly increase just by simply killing L. So it was understandable if L didn’t want to publicize himself.
But honestly, why would L contact me, especially a low ranking agent as myself? And I soon came to a conclusion; I was filling in the role of his public face. In other words, I was L’s shield. That alone was going to put me on a dangerous spot; I was already on probation, which means no badge, no gun and no authority.
