But she isn’t worried because she knows she is the best runner. In the beginning of the story, Squeaky was very focused on running, she didn’t know what was going on around her. She didn’t notice how much she was hurting others. She walks around the city with her brother Raymond, who she takes care of. In the middle of the story, Squeaky starts to be mean to others. When some girls from her school walked near her to asked Raymond what grade he’s in, Squeaky immediately snaps at them. She says, “You got anything to say to my brother, you say it to me, Mary Louise Williams of Raggedy Town, Baltimore.” This proves that she doesn’t like people talking to her brother, and that she’s over protective. In the end of the story, Squeaky was running the race, but saw Raymond running beside her. When the race was over, it said on the loudspeaker that she won. She was jumping up and down, but not from winning, because she was happy for her brother. Her brother had nothing to call his own, no awards or ribbons. This was proven in ‘Everything Will Be Okay’ when James finally realized that all he cared about in the entire story was the kitten, but he then realized to start caring about himself, and how he got to decide how he treated people and animals. This was also proven in ‘Raymond’s Run’ when Squeaky realized that she was so focused on herself and bragging about winning the race, she didn’t notice how she was treating others. She finally realized in the end to not be selfish and care just about herself, but be nice to others, and give them a chance at succeeding.
