In Fences by August Wilson, the character Raynell both simultaneously symbolizes the best aspects of Rose’s character while symbolizing the worst aspects of Troy. Firstly, she symbolizes Rose's nature of being selfless as she overlooks her own ambitions and wants, and how she commits to a life of being a mother to Raynell, a child that does not even belong to her. On the contrary, Raynell also symbolizes the worst aspects of Troy, where she is the most obvious example of the consequences to his repeated bad behavior. The symbolism of Raynell in terms of Rose’s character is seen in the following line of dialogue from Rose, “You just have to give it a chance, it will grow. Now come on and do what I told you. We have to get ready.” This quote
