Reading Strategies Worksheet
Identify two reading goals, one short-term and one long-term.
• Long-term reading goal: Incorporate three reading techniques: skimming, visual mapping, and text marking • Short-term reading goal: Use mapping in weekly readings
Write a 100- to 150-word response to each of the following questions:
• How do you currently approach the weekly readings in the course?
When reading each chapter as noted on the syllabus, I often find myself rereading what I previously read because I am not comprehending what I am reading. The topics discussed in the chapter readings are not interesting and do not intrigue me to continue and enjoy the reading.
However, I do try to incorporate some tactics to help me visualize what I am reading by putting them into real life scenarios or examples. For example, the reading topic this week was about “Reading.” When I read the chapter and recognized some techniques that I perform, I think about how this has helped me in the past.
I also try to highlight the key points of the readings and write them down. This helps me remember what bulleted items are described in the readings. I take notes in a similar to mapping but this study technique can improve after learning how to map correctly.
• How might you incorporate three of the suggestions covered this week into your study time?
The suggestions, which stood out the most, are the studying techniques: skimming, note taking, and mapping. After reading the materials, I know how to perform these techniques correctly, and I will use them when I read or study. Studying requires a large amount of reading and I want to ensure that if I need to study, I will accomplish it the correct way.
Skimming a paragraph gives a sense of what the reading is about; whereas, visual mapping, and text marking require reading the chapters, taking notes, or drawing a diagram to see the topic and subordinating
