Andrew began the podcast by defining resilience as “being in a bad situation, accepting it and finding a way out of it”. It means to have a plan to move forward and not just exist in the state of victimhood” (Coville 2:34). Andrew’s perspective highlights that resilience is not just about surviving adversity, but constantly finding solutions and rising above it. The audience learns that Andrew first served as a U.S. Marine and later became a police officer. During his time as a marine, Andrew and his best friend, Nick, were deployed to Afghanistan in 2009. Andrew developed his sense of purpose as a police officer, much like Jefferson did through his meetings with Grant, demonstrating the power of perseverance in overcoming adversity and achieving dignity. His experience proves how resilient and strong he was, as he was continuously trying to move forward. This led to him understanding his purpose in life, finding self-respect and proving his dignity.
