Rebecca’s PhD project aimed to characterise a subpopulation of neural progenitors in terms of origin, distribution and molecular markers during zebrafish embryonic development. Rebecca discovered that basal progenitors that so far have been mainly described in the mammalian cortex, exist in zebrafish central nervous system. She revealed that in zebrafish, these neural progenitors seem to be regularly spaced along the spinal cord and express vsx1. In order to test whether neuronal spacing results from lateral inhibition, Rebecca initiated collaborations with Prof. Buzz Baum’s group
