In the essay “Open Door” from the Field Guide to Getting Lost by Rebecca Solnit, she presents the question from the pre-Socratic philosopher Meno, “How will you go about finding that thing the nature of which is totally unknown to you?” That “totally unknown thing” is usually what you need to find and finding it is a matter of getting lost. The question facing all of us then is how to get lost. We seek transformation — wisdom, love, inspiration, grace — without knowing what is on the other side of that transformation.
