The BoardSource governance index of 2015 indicates that 55 percent of the boards and 69 percent of the CEOs surveyed are dissatisfied with their board diversity (Devor, 2015). Not only that, 71 percent of boards and 75 percent of CEOs believe a more diverse board would make them better at fulfilling their mission (Devor, 2015). Yet since 2010, board diversity has only grown to 4 percent with 90 percent of board chairs, 80 percent of boards, and 89 percent of CEOs, predominantly Whites (www.uac.org).

According to her, in order to fix it, nonprofit boards and CEOs must first, make an internal and external commitment to diversity (Hayes, 2017). Therefore, to build a board that is inclusive and transformative, board chairs and CEOs must create a clear board member role description, recruit and reach beyond the immediate network, and develop a strong vetting process (Hayes, 2017). Therefore, building an inclusive board begins from top to bottom. Explicitly, it begins with the leadership commitment to it and thereafter, extend to the bottom members of the group. Some basic features of the top-down method should include leadership development, training, equal employment and zero tolerance policies, social responsibility initiatives, recruitment and retention programs, linking diversity to organizational goals, and culture-change …show more content…
In the case of the growing and related issues of racial inequality and poverty, we should openly acknowledge that the problem exists, and explore the factors why the problem exists. The question now is what is the root causes of diversity that hinders collaborations, innovation, and growth in our nonprofit organizations?
