There are 42 species of cardinals that belong to the family of Cardinalidae. They are a mainly Neotropical group with representatives extending well up into U.S. There are two types of cardinals, grosbeaks and buntings. Florida has six regularly occurring and two rare species within the state. Cardinals are one of my favorite birds in Florida. These beautiful red creatures have amazing parental skills (breeding), lovely songs, and interesting physical traits. Their habitat in Florida offers them good amounts of food to grow and reproduce while also living as permanent residents in this area. These birds feed on weed seeds found in open areas and at forest edges. They will also eat insects and will feed their juvenile with them. [What else do they eat?] Their breeding consist of monogamous pairs with open cup nests, the female incubates the eggs for 11 to 14 days. The juveniles fledge after a further 9 to 14 days.
