This adds diversity and relatable aspects that many books lack. Cal and Maven, two important characters, are opposites. "Unlike his brother, Cal's voice is strong and authoritative" (86). Maven is more of the shy, under appreciated brother while Cal is the strong leader. Not everyone can relate to being in a leader role. The same applies to being shy. However, most people can relate to one of these characters. The author has taken into account that people are different and has added this aspect to her characters so that a larger audience can relate. Mare and Gisa, her sister, are also opposites. "Gisa is skilled, pretty, and sweet. I'm a bit rougher, as Mom kindly puts it. The dark to Gisa's light" (14). The two daughters are complete opposites. However, both are successful. Many books shows that only the pretty and the naturally skilled people are successful. In the real world though, this is not true. Anyone can be successful if they try. Not many books face the problem of deception and betrayal. However, in real life, this is a daily issue. "Maven has betrayed me. No, he was never on my side at all" (345). Maven used Mare from the beginning. All the emotions he showed were fake. Many times people have to face problems similar to this. People feel as if they are worthless because of being used. Books that show characters being betrayed help people to overcome this feeling of worthlessness because they view the book with a positive bias towards the protagonist. People then realize that being used has nothing to do with themselves. They are shown that humans are naturally deceptive and that has nothing to do with
