My culture has impacted and contributed in so many things from my life. My friends, sports, hobbies, clothing, music the list is endless. I was born in the United States but I classify as Hispanic and my Hispanic side is what I cherish the most. I have grown up with Mexican cultures and they have really stuck with me. I am a Sophomore Viking who is hardworking, athletic, quiet, and bilingual. My spanish is not perfect but it is still really good since my parents only want us to speak spanish in the house and this has caused me to understand and speak spanish better and be able to communicate to more people. I feel like since my accent is not the best everything comes out bad and my friends constantly ridicule me when I speak spanish. Even though my friends mock my spanish I still appreciate and love my second language because it is like another part of me. Patricia Williams wrote in her article “Ethnic Hash”, “Yes, I have learned to love my inner ethnic child”(p.14) The author is trying to express the statement of how you need to love your culture and the things that define you. This ability of being bilingual helped me tremendously in my life. For starters this is how I met my best friends that I still talk to in middle school. This one boy in my class only spoke spanish and so I started conversing with him in spanish and we got to know each other more.
