Montresor and Fortunato have had an ongoing conflict for the majority of their relationship. Fortunato drove Montresor to the breaking point. He insulted him and his work in public, embarrassed him, always had to be better than him, stole his friends and girlfriends, talked bad about him and his family, disrespected him, and things of that sort.
“I shall not die of a cough.” Montresor always joked about death. And he makes is almost seem funny, until the end. Poe uses “dark” humor to lighten up the story. Montresor decided to get Fortunato drunk way of getting a chance to kill fortunate for revenge.
