The book Three Day Road, by John Boyden, shows in many ways how the relationship between Xavier and Elijah completely transforms because of the horrors of war. The effects of war and the tribulations of both characters completely alter their relationship. They tend to stay together and rely on one another during the horrific time of the war. For instance, “‘Do you think the Canadians will separate us Elijah?’ I ask. I try to sound relaxed, a little bored. It takes Elijah a long time to answer, so long that I think he’s fallen asleep. ‘They’d Better not’” (61). The transformation of the relationship traces back to the kind of relationship Xavier and Elijah had when they were
