On the 8th day of the siege the troops came back from Gonzalez brining
32 volunteers to help in the battle which raised the number of Alamo defenders to around 200. Colonel Travis once drew a line in ground on the ground and asked any men willing to stay and fight to step over to his side of the line, All except 1 Texan troops did. Travis’ army looked at the Alamo as the key to the defence to Texas and they were ready to give their lives rather than surrender their positions to the mexican general Santa Anna. The Alamo’s troop consisted of Jim Bowie (who was known as the knife fighter) , David Crockett (known as the frontiersmen and former congressman from Tennessee) . The final mexican assault came before sunrise on the morning of March 6, 1836 as a line of mexican soldiers became closer and closer from the darkness and headed to take down the walls of the Alamo. Cannons and several gunmen beat back many other attacks before the final battle but not this one. Mexican troops surrounded the walls and rushed in the building.
